Jim used to sit there and watch bones with me. Most of us know how he had a very soft stomach. So he would sit there gagging the whole time but still watched it for me.

Jim Chant – the Salt of the Portland Earth – was my friend for 40 years. I knew him through good times, better times and funny times. He touched me deeply: his practicality born of digging a living out of the soil, his curiosity, his wry and wet sense of humour, his strong and capable hands, his desire to be helpful, his uncanny ability to fix things and to mess things up. Jim’s people were always welcome at Jim’s, any time of night or day: they did not need to fit into a place because nobody fit anyway. Being with Jim, it was not necessary to act out the characters we have made ourselves into, or to be somebody other than Jim’s friend: this was as natural as it gets. Jim made us all welcome and tied us all together. We need to remember these special qualities he brought to our lives; they will not easily, if ever, be replaced.

Portland doesn't feel like Portland today. I remember Jim as somebody who helped my family at times when nobody else would. I remember him taking a tractor to the bar instead of a truck. I remember soulful green eyes and a dark tan walking through the corn field. Rest in peace, Jim, you've earned it. Nothing but respect XO
