VONHONE, Gerhard (Gerd) Josef August,

1927 - 2020

In his 92nd year, Gerd passed away at Smiths Falls Hospital on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. Loving Father to Stephan (Christine), Michael (Sheryl Martin) and Christine (Jim Broughton). Adoring Opa to Kyle (Jessica Henry), Amanda (Tyler Hicks), Megan (Steve Medeiros), Adam, Mitchell, and several great-grandchildren. Cherished brother of Anneliese, Ulla and Peter. Predeceased by his devoted wife Doris Dalang; parents Dr. Hermann Vonhoene and Hildegard Ruppelt; brother Alban; sister Hildegard Moeller; and grandson Erik.

As an ambitious young man, Gerd immigrated from Germany to Canada in 1954 in search of his own farmland, and together with Doris, they built a successful dairy operation, raised their family, travelled the world, and became very proud Canadians. He was active in the community through the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the local school board, and as a long-time organist for St. Columbanus Church in Elgin.

Due to the Corona-19 pandemic, funeral arrangements will be made at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations be made to Operation Smile Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, or to the charity of your choice.

“I have had a wonderful life.” ~ Gerd Vonhone

So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I have many memories of his big smile and laugh at the gatherings of my childhood. One of my fondest however, is of thrilled my Dad was when your parents would come over Christmas Day after mass, it was a "tradition" , he would say. We both really enjoyed those visits.
Rest in peace Gerd, a life well lived.
