Obituary

Merrick ; Richard

Local artist, Richard (Dick) Allen Merrick, who made Westport his home 42 years ago with his artistic wife Pat, left this world April 8, 2020 in his 89th year to join his Lord. He is survived by his second wife of many years, Joyce Kayser with whom he spent time further developing an island home on Newboro Lake. Dick will be missed by his wife Joyce, daughters Susan Wells and Karen McEachern, sons-in-law Richard Wells and Rev. Rodger McEachern, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Dick Merrick’s most lasting contribution to his community can be seen on Highway 42 where a two-storey tall, colourfully painted Bass built out of pop cans sways in the wind next to Norris Bait & Tackle. A celebration of life will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church in Westport and Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto at a later date following the end of the pandemic.

Joyce and family- I was honoured to know Richard for many years. It is one of my fondest memories to have been able to live in and enjoy the home he and Pat built by hand on Noonan Rd. I enjoyed the visits from you and Richard as you enjoyed your walk down Noonan as he inspected his handiwork . A craftsman and artist with many stories to share. He will be missed and it my privilege to have known him. All my best to you , Joyce, and to his family. Ron Rollo

Sending my deepest sympathies at this sad time Joyce, and family. I had a very nice visit with Dick one day a few months ago while in at the grocery store. I had not known he was the artist who designed the large fish. It has always been quite amazing to see and now I shall always think of Dick every time I pass and admire his talent. Noreen Sullivan
