Obituary

Vogelzang; Peter Jan
September 10, 1935 – November 29, 2018

After a lengthy illness, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Jan Vogelzang of Seeley’s Bay, on November 29, 2018 in his 84th year at Providence Continuing Care Centre.
Loving husband to the late Sylvia (McNutt) for 53 years, he has returned to his place in heaven to be reunited with her. He will be greatly missed by his sons, John (Sandra), Peter (Lori), Robert (Karen) and David. Cherished Opa to Calista Vogelzang, Marika Vogelzang, Grace Vogelzang, Josh and Austin Murray. Peter will be missed by Paul (Terri) Almeida and remembered as Opa to Ethan and Chayse Almeida.
He will be remembered as a friend and travelling companion to his nephew Don and Susan Sutton and their son, Geoffrey Sutton, and will also miss the friendship of Martha Khalil.
Peter was predeceased by his parents Rintje Vogelzang and Elizabeth Alida Ringeling, sisters Reinalda Maria van der Sman, Agatha Vogelzang and Margareta Christina Kost. He is survived by his brother Jan Harmen Vogelzang of The Netherlands.

Peter emigrated to Canada in 1956, and after employment with Empire Life Insurance Company, purchased a small insurance brokerage in Seeley’s Bay in 1973. Given Peter’s entrepreneurial nature, the business grew and became known as Vogelzang & Associates Insurance Brokers Ltd., and after a merger, Thomson Jemmett Vogelzang. For over 30 years he served his customers, and the community, with the utmost honesty and integrity, principles which were evident in both his personal and business relationships. In his own unassuming fashion, he was philanthropic and caring to those in need.

Heartfelt thanks to the caring physicians, nurses and support staff at staff at Providence Continuing Care Centre for their excellent and compassionate care. Special thanks to Sandy Michaud and Maria Falcao for their devotion and support shown to Peter throughout his illness.

The family will receive friends at the Scotland Funeral Home, 27 Main Street, Elgin on Saturday December 1, 2018 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00 pm. Funeral Service in the Kingston Christian Fellowship Church at 2647 Hwy 38, Kingston on Sunday December 2, 2018 at 12:00 pm . A light lunch will be served after the service, with interment to be held at Olivet Cemetery, Hwy 32 Seeley’s Bay. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (Providence Continuing Care Centre, Palliative Care Unit), or Kingston Christian Fellowship, in Peter’s memory.

Peter was a man of great spiritual depth and understanding, as well as one of the most intelligent and interesting people I've ever been blessed to know. He was so utterly devoted to his wife and those he loved, even if outward manifestation of his caring sometimes seemed reserved. He had a complicated and witty sense of humour and enjoyed intellectual sparring as well as teasing those he loved the most. To be teased by Peter was to be loved by him. His mind held the rich and rare treasure of literary, philosophical and theological insight. He was a true student of history and faith and he loved The Almighty One with an unwavering sincerity. I first understood the depth of his heart for God, when I heard his voice in Church, singing earnestly and beautifully, eyes closed, tears flowing, heart overflowing with the true gratitude that comes only from one moved by the Lord's grace and sacrifice. Peter was a man of God and no matter what, that was more important to him than earthly titles or recognition or wealth. Peter carried sorrow that those who have truly seen and experienced suffering often do. He never forgot that it was by the Grace of God and scrounged old potatoes that he survived the second world war when so many did not. He never forgot how blessed he was to have come to Canada, find Sylvia and have four sons. Each Christmas Peter would compose a poem for his wife. It was the highlight of the gift exchange and usually evoked a mixture of tears, groans and giggling from those gathered. The letter ended with the revelation of a special and personal gift from him to his beloved. I feel blessed to have shared time with Peter learning from him and exchanging ideas and hopes for what matters most in this life. I've no doubt that Peter is with his lovely Sylvia enjoying the majesty and all encompassing radiant love of his Savior Jesus. Thank you Lord that we were able to love and be loved by Peter. Until we meet again. Love Allie
